How about this then:
1) look for the defaults file in $APPDEFAULTS
2) look for the defaults file in $PATH
3) look for the defaults file in <boot-drive>:\defaults
4) look for the defaults file in <boot-drive>:\
That way, if you don't have environment variables set, you can still keep
even more crap off of the root of your boot disk.
Maybe there should be a 2.5) look in current directory, or maybe a 0.5)
for that.
